while not a laminectomy, 3 years ago i had a bulging disk fixed at L5-S1.to get to the bulge they had to unattached the muscle from 2 vertebrae and grind away bone on the two vertebrae, trim back and patch up the disk, reattach the muscle and sew me back up. I don't know exactly what kind of shape you're in, but if you're at the point where you really can't walk and it looks like you're never going to walk further than the toilet without surgery, then go for it, and accept whatever the recovery period is going to be.
